President, Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers Union

Bruce R. Smith was sworn in as the President of the Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers International Union (AFL-CIO, CLC) on January 26, 2010.

Mr. Smith served as International Secretary Treasurer of the Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers International Union since July 2004, and was re-elected by acclamation to a second four-year term in 2008.

A father of three daughters and a native of Michigan, Bruce started his labor movement involvement while employed by Noreen Pattern & Foundry in Fruitport, Michigan in 1972 which was represented by the International Molders & Allied Workers Union. In 1977, he was elected the full time business agent for the statewide amalgamated Local Union #120. While working in Michigan he was active in and served as an officer in the West Michigan Labor Council.

In 1984, in Bal Harbour, Florida, at the International Molders Union Convention, Bruce was elected Financial Auditor. He served in the position at their headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio until 1988, when the former Molders Union merged with the Former Glass, Pottery & Plastics International Union and formed the current GMP. With the merger Bruce was elected an International Executive Officer. He was reelected in 1992, 1996, and 2000.

In May of 2001, Bruce was appointed Area Director in the St. Louis, MO office, and in August of 2002, Bruce was appointed Vice President of Area 1 in the Washington, D.C. office.

In addition to his Presidential responsibilities, Bruce currently serves as Trustee on a number of Taft-Hartley pension plans, health & welfare plans, and the GMP & Employers Retiree Trust.
